In the 1930's NASCAR was not even invented! People used to take there cars out to the beaches and race them. These races were only for strictly stock cars (so no modifications). People would hold races on the daytona beach. They would invite everyone that wanted to race with there car, cars such as hardtops, converdibles, coupes, sports cars and many others. In one of the races a man named Milt Marion was flagged the winner in his '36 Ford and collected the $1700 prize.
People were also competeing to see who could the world speed record. A man named Frank Lockhart in his 183-cid V-16-powered Stutz Blackhawk made on of the first records of 198.292 mph in 1928! A man named Ray Keech was the next one to break the Land Speed Record. he wsa driving Jim White's 36-cylinder Triplex making the new Land Speed Record 207.552 mph in 1928! Sir Macolm Campbell was the next one to break the record. He was driving his Bluebird V, a 30 foot long, 5 ton car that had a 2227-cid, 2700-horse-power engine. Campbell ran a 278.82 mph two-way adverage and a one-way run with 330 mph!
